Default Problems with a spay

Hey,

A couple days ago I had my rabbits spayed. The vet used staples to close up the incision. Unfortunately a couple of my rabbits have pulled out some of the staples and now have opened the incision. We were able to get it temporarily covered and I think they are going to be ok.

This is my first experience with spaying and neutering rabbits and I am wondering if I might be using the wrong vet. If you have had your rabbits spayed can you tell me what they used to close up the incision? Has anyone ever had these kinds of problems before?

My vet doesn't use staples but two sets of dissolving stitches. One set is internal in some way and the other closes the skin on the outside. It's very effective and heals very fast without having to go back for stitch removal.

Bunny spays in Australia have really improved over the last five years. Our girls used to end up with an enormous big zipper-like scar up the tummy but now it's just a tiny incision that heals really fast.

Kaerthy,

I cant personally tell you too much about a spay personally. Although I work for a vet as a tech and we are doing two today. I'll let you know afterwards. However I had my Dr do my rabbits neuter and disolvable stitches were used as well as surgical adhesive so no sutures were sticking out to have something for bun to pick at. I couldnt imagine using staples. Just to me seems like a tragidy waiting to happen with the possibility of them being pulled out. Which has already occured.

We had many, many buns sutured with staples after a spay. I prefer stitches, but the vet prefers staples. We've had several of them who pulled out staples and each case was different depending on how many staples were pulled, and how far into the healing process they were pulled. If the wound stays closed and you are several days post surgery, and your rabbit is remaining somewhat subdued, you may be able to avoid a return to the vet. If it's early in the process or many staples were pulled, I would play it safe and call the vet for his opinion. In a couple of the cases where we've had to return to the office, the doctor simply applied surgical cement to keep the incision closed long enough to heal sufficiently.

Ooh boy, those stories just make me cringe. I can't imagine using staples on such a small wound like it must be for a rabbit spay. If the wound gapes at all, you have to get that poor mite back to the vet asap.
