I have heard that rabbits have a very short life span though the statistical data says a well cared for house rabbit that has been spayed or neutered early in life has a life expectancy of 8 to 12 years of age.
What is your experience with rabbits? How long do they live? |

From what I know, a rabbit has only a 12 to 15-month life span. My friend's rabbit lasted for only 12 months.
It's a fairly high maintenance pet. It requires daily care twice as much as what cat needs. They are fed with pellets, grass, hay and water. But rabbits are not recommended for young children because they can bite and scratch. Last edited by heaven : 8th January 2007 at 09:45 AM. |

That is quite a short life span for a pet. I think it is not worth to get a rabbit as a pet if that’s the case. I think it is not worth to give all that attention and it will just die easily.

Well, people say different things. From what I know, rabbits live an average of 5-10 years. This is based on experience. We used to sell rabbits. And of course, we had to know a lot about them to keep them alive. The hassle with rabbits is the fact that they are overly temperamental and you should handle them with utmost care or you might cause them serious injuries.

Maybe if you take care of them the proper way then they will last for years but if you don't then they could easily die. Just like what Oopsie said. It's like, the rabbit's life span depends on its owner.

I'm really shocked with some of the posts here. I just have to say that if your rabbit only lives for a few months (let alone a few years), he/she isn't being taken care of very well it at all.
I've had my rabbit since he was about 6 weeks old. He is about to turn 9 years old next month in April. I've owned him since I was 10 years old and took care of him on my own all this time. I consider him to be a very low maintenence pet, but it might just be because he's so well behaved. With feeding, I just put a handful of rabbit pellets in his container in the morning and once again at night. I give him hay, vegetables, or fruits whenever I remember to do so, which isn't even too often. He has never bitten or scratched a single soul in the almost 9 years i've had him. He is potty trained and won't "go to the bathroom" anywhere but his litter box. He isn't even neutered. Maybe I just have a super-bunny... It's been great having him as my pet and friend for nearly half of my life and i'll be very sad whenever he passes on. |
