My cousin comes up with just about anything as long as it's safe.
Her hamster had a toilet paper roll. She used plastic water bottles as tubes. She cut the bottles with scissors very evenly, stuck one bottle slightly inside the other and then taped them together. She also had little blocks of wood they could chew on and bang around. This seemed to make her hamster happy. The objects she makes for the hamster seems to last for a long time. I think the common favorites for hamsters are something that they could shred. I usually give rags or anything that is no longer useful for me and I just let them put it into pieces. You just have to be patient to clean afterwards.
