Default Why a hedgehog ?

I never heard of people who have a hedgehog as a pet. Of course i know that people take care of hedgehogs in winter but not the whole year. Now i would like to know why people have one as a pet ? I mean it is a wild animal you can't train. And how do you re-adjust his typical home in a house ?

It would be nice if someone could say something about it.

I never heard of it, too. In Germany it is not common to make that. At least i never met a person who does it or hear from a person. I would not want a hedgehog at home anyways.

I have never seen a person that owns a hedgehog, too. Maybe it is really something uncommon or just a few people who would want a hedgehog as a pet.

Thank you both so far. It is really strange. I mean a hedgehog is a nice animal and they are cute to watch but not as a pet. The normal hedgehog just walks around in the nature and does not make much. You can not train him or cuddle him. I guess it is better to let him stay where he is naturally from.

I agree that it is really strange to keep something as a pet when you cannot enjoy owning it. I always think that a pet and owner should have a certain bond but how could you develop that bond if you cannot touch it?

Hedgehogs actually make pretty goods pets much like guinnea pigs and chinchillas. Not for the active individual and more of a lap-dog type of pet, but they will run the 'wheel' like hamsters, just not as fast. Good indoor cage is required about 2 x 3 feet minimum with a box, or other enclosure, someplace that they can use as a den to get away from everybody. Their quills can be a bit tricky, but they're not like a porcupine ... more like a bristle brush. Only time you have a problem is if you get your finger caught when they roll into a ball. Do have strong muscles, those little critters. Don't need a lot of care or attention and aren't bad with dogs and cats.

They come in something like 90+ colors and are tending to be the newest trend in pets. Can find out a bunch more info at this site which also contains links to others.

Hedge hogs DO make good pets, and you can enjoy them! I have an albino one and he is just great! You can also train them to go to the litter box. If yours is already friendly you CAN cuddle it, they do posses the ability to relax thier quills. Only when they are frightened do their quills stand up.

Hedgehogs actually make very good companion pets and are quite popular. They are raised and sold as domesticated pets and can be good for those that may not be able to have another kind of pet, or simply like these adorable little creatures.
