I would not use ammonia, the dog may end up thinking that is a good place to go potty. Keep trash in an area where a dog won't have access for starters, clean the trash can once a week with a VINEGAR WATER solution, it kills ammonia, while being non-toxic (and cheap) if the dog should lick it. The same solution can be used for steam cleaning carpets, cleaning floors, cleaning sidewalks or anything else a dog has peed on. Just make sure your solution ratio matches what you plan to use it for.
Also, this is an excellent opportunity to train a dog the value of the command "No". This is a sign that your dog is boss and not you.
