Default Cats eyes

Can anybody tell me why the cats' eyes glow in the dark? Is it true that there are cats that change its color in an instant? I have noticed this in one of my cats--it changes color in an instant from her natural color to a bright green when she gets excited. But I dont know if it's really true; maybe it's just my imagination. My unrelated theory is that when this happens, it only indicates that my cat would love to play with you.

I didn't know the answer myself, so I resorted to the world's best: Google.

Found this link: Cat's Eyes

Hope this helps.

I think every transformation of cat's eyes from one color to a different color as you were stating has it's own meaning. All I noticed from our cat back then was her shape that changes from narrow to broad and vice versa. The link provided by hoozah has a lot of explanation and information regarding this topic.

All i know about cats eyes is they cant see you if you are too near from them. Did you notice that when you give your cat food close to their eyes they cant find it?? Like what hoozah link explains cats eyes are best in detecting prey in greater distance. No wonder, why they are often awake at night.

Never thought of that, Chinesegirl. I've just observed cats eye's transformation but never knew that they can't see something near. I think they are often awake when they are hungry hahaha.

Just like some animals, cats cannot distinguish color. Or should I just say, cats are color-blind? But they can see in dim light better than most kinds of animals, however, they can't see in complete darkness. And yes, cats eyes seem to shine in the dark. This is due to the crystalline needles in the inner lining of a cat's eyes. Even the smallest amount of light striking the reflective area of this crystalline needles can cause shininess, resulting to a glow-in-the-dark eyes.

Basically, cats sees the world in the shades of blue and green. Thats why cats are called color blind. Although, cats can see other color they just dont pay more attention to it. Cat has these unique ability to concentrate on small amout of light that gives them the extraoridnary night vision.

Cats are generally nocturnal in habit. The retina of the cat's eye is made extra sensitive to light by a layer of guanine, which causes the eye to shine at night in a strong light.....
