Default What is difference between male or female parrot?

Majority of parrots are not sexually dimorphic, which means you cannot in no way shape or form tell just by looking at it if it is male or female. Some people say that in Cockatoos that the females have reddish brown eyes and males have greyish black, but I have met DNA sexed males that had reddish brown eyes, so its no always a sure sign. For the most part the only way to check is to have a DNA test done by a vet. But then again if your bird starts laying eggs, thats always a sure sign too!

Give your opinion.

I also agree that the majority of parrots cannot be sexed by anything you can see. There are some parrots that can be sexed by looking certain feathers or color but that is rare. I think most of time you will need a blood test to tell for sure.

This is something that I can honestly say that I have never gave any thought to. Whenever I see a bird I guess we hardly ever want to know if its male or female.

There is one way to tell if parrots are male or female. Buy 2 and put them in 1 cage if they mate they male and female. If they both male they will fight. Females are less aggressive and will get along. That is one way of telling the sex but whos got 2400 dollars to test bird sex. LOL

Chemikal, You cannot just tell the sex of a bird by its "sexual needs" Just because it has sex does not mean that it is female or male. There really is not a way to tell the sex of a Parrot unless you do DNA testing and blood typing unless you can tell via tail feathers. Some Females have brighter tail feathers.

Dimorphic? This is the first time I have ever heard this word defined. I think parrots are the best birds in the world as pets. They seem fairly calm and are so beautiful and smart. I like how they will just sit around on a perch and be happy and you don't have to worry too much about them trying to "run away". I don't know about the sexes with them as I have always been under the impression that boy birds were the most colorful and that is the way I've made my judgements.

Eclectus parrots are the only species of parrots that can be sexed by visual means. This is by observing the color of the parrot's feather when it is about three weeks old. Besides this, there is absolutely no other way to determine the gender of a parrot by visual inspection.
