Default speaking birds

Which birds are able to speak, or at least able to learn a few words ? I am no bird expert, so maybe you can mention a few names for me.

Does it really depend on the breed ? I thought
it is like with talents. Some can learn and it
some not, independent from the breed.

I only know parrots and those smaller black birds with the yellow pecker. I can not remember the name though. Maybe i will remember it within the day. Or maybe someone else knows the name.

I think I have heard of that black bird that you are talking about Phil. Is it the black bird that needs to have a minor surgical operation under its tongue so that it will be able to talk?

As far as i know he does not need an operation to speak. So maybe we mean 2 different birds.

I found something interesting in the net. Here is a list of birds which count as the best speakers. Please note, those four birds are not the only speaking birds. They are just the most talented :

the African Gray Parrot
the Yellow Naped Amazon
the Double Yellow Headed Amazon
the Blue Front Amazon

I see. What I was talking about is also a black bird but it got a dash of yellow or orange in its eyes. It seems that there is applied eyeliner on its eyes when you look at it.

Phil, I think I am talking about a maena. I don’t know if it has an English name but that is the name we use for it in our country.

I know that parrots and some birds have the ability to learn to speak a few words. Can they really communicate with their owners?
