Default What to do with an injured bird?

I'm wondering what should one do in case he finds an injured bird along a street or anywhere...say, in the park. Is it okay if he just takes the bird with him and care for it by himself or should he get professional help? Are there any laws regarding bird adoption? Are there agencies one can contact about the situation? I mean, it's kind of scary if I see an injured bird along my way and try picking it up. I'm afraid I might cause it more trouble than help.

I think most people will just ignore it if we consider its from the park. People are too busy to notice it and only a person with a good heart will really pay attention to the injured bird. But if I am on the shoe of that good samaritan then I will consider picking up the bird and go to the nearest pet clinic. never heard of any laws yet.

It would be best if you will try to help the poor little thing. But like what trixie said, there are a lot of people who are too busy to notice their surroundings. There are even mean kids who would probably play and pick on it when they see an injured bird.

If you see a bird which seems in trouble and you are willing to help him, go up to him. He is then maybe afraid and wants to fly away, if he flies away it is alright. If he can not fly, it is a sign for you that he needs help. It is better to look for professional help, because most of the time birds have injuries you can not see. In my country you can take wild animals like birds ( hedgehogs, doves and so on ) to the vet and they'll vet it for free. I don't know how it works in your country. You can call a vet or a animal shelter to ask what to do in such a case. Then you'll know it when there is a case of emergency.

Thanks for giving a nice advice Phil. It seems you have a first-hand experience on helping an injured bird. How does it feel after you helped a bird and it got well?

Hi Cessy,
i once found a dove in the backgarden. It seemed injured and could not fly. I took it into my flat because i did not wanted the neighbour cats to get it. I first called some places because i was not sure where i could get help. These calls took some time but in the end i put the dove in a cardboard and drove to the vet. The vet was happy about it, she said that a lot of people don't care about doves and let them die. They made an operation, because the dove was seriously injured. A few days later i called them and they told me that everything went well and what will happen next. The vet set it free later and now i know, that somewhere in the city is my saved dove. Some kind of happy end

That is a very inspiring story! I hope that more people would be aware that animals need help and if we see an injured animal, there is something we could do save it. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

No problem Cessy. I guess a lot of people don't like doves because there are so much of it in the cities. And when they see an injured one they don't care because they think negative about them. And of course there are "enough doves". Moreover people nowadays are very afraid of bird flu and other diseases. So bad time for birds right now.

That is so great, Phil. I mean, now I know what to do. I am scared to handle a seemingly injured bird since, I know its fragile and I might hurt it more. I hope there is a free consultation for animals in my country, though.

You shouldn't be afraid. I am sure you would be careful, so i don't think you'll hurt him badly by picking him up. Maybe it will be unpleasant for him, but if you won't pick him up, he'll maybe die sooner or later.
